| Discover Tenerife
Rising up from the Atlantic seabed some 70 miles from the West African coast we find the fascinating volcanic archipelago known as “Las Canarias”.
Tenerife is the biggest of the islands and the most diverse, dominated by Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain at (3718mtrs). This unique island combines rich mineral colours thrown up from the earth’s core, forests of canary pine and some truly spectacular scenery. This tour is based in Puerto de la Cruz at the foot of the fertile Oratava valley and staring out towards the Americas. Our accommodation for the week is the comfortable and very well situated Our itinerary for the week is as follows :-
Day .1)
This is the Day of our arrival in colourful Puerto de la Cruz. You’ll be taken out for dinner to meet the rest of the group.
Day .2)
“La Fortaleza” (The Fortress)
Our first day starts at the Mount Teide visitors centre which provides a short, informative film on how this volcanic island emerged from the sea. From there we walk one of the National Park’s classic routes, La Fortaleza with it’s towering rocky buttresses and unique ‘other world’ scenery. In the afternoon we travel a short distance to the magical rocky spires of Los Roques de Garcia, close to the National Parador Hotel which is situated actually in the crater. (Walking 4hrs approx) Day .3)
“Volcan Garachicho / Chinyero”.
The last volcanic eruptions took place on the island in 1909 in this area. Our route takes us through canary pine forest to arrive at a desolate place called Arenas Negras (Black Sands). From here the path twists spookily through hardened lava flow where, although it would seem impossible for life to flourish, a mixture of lichen and spruce offer vibrant unexpected colour at your very feet! (Walking 4hrs approx) Day .4)
“Chamorga loop”.
The Anaga mountains straddle the far northern peninsular and Chamorga village offers a lush reminder of how close to the African continent we really are. This is a great island walk with Canyons, coastal path and of course the unrelenting Atlantic rollers that crash in to shape the coastline. (Walking 3.5hrs approx) Day .5)
Rest Day!
The temptation to go and out and discover some more is up to you and an excursion will be offered. You might want to get up late and read a paper in one of the many vibrant town squares in Puerto de la Cruz, or just do your own thing. It’s a holiday and it should always feel like that! Day .6)
“Los Organos”
No walk programme would be complete without this gem of a walk. We start at La Caldera recreation area (1000mtrs) and climb up to a magical cliff- hugging pathway high above the north western coastline. (Walking 4.5hrs approx) Day .7)
“Arasa Ridge”.
The tiny village of Masca clings to the hillside surrounded by breathtaking scenery. These are the Teno mountains in the west looking like something out of Jurassic park. Our excursion takes us from the ruined farmhouses of Arasa along a wide ridge with some of the best views imaginable. A totally unforgettable day in every way! (Walking 3hrs approx) Day .8)
Sadly homewards after breakfast, unless you wish to extend your stay?
